Place value tells us what each digit is worth.
Comparison helps us decide which number is greater or smaller.
Estimation helps us check if an answer is reasonable before or after exact calculation.
Place value is the base of number sense. A digit changes value when it moves to a different place.
To compare numbers, first compare the number of digits. If the number of digits is the same, compare from the leftmost digit.
Rounding gives an approximate value. It is not exact, but it is useful for checking and mental maths.
Estimation is not guessing. It is a planned approximation using rounding.
Meaning: Place value depends on position. Face value is the digit itself.
Definition:
In 58,204, the face value of 8 is 8. Its place value is 8,000.
Meaning: Comparison tells which number is greater, smaller, or equal.
Definition: Compare numbers by place value from left to right.
For 48,736 and 48,673, compare digits. 4 and 4 match. 8 and 8 match. 7 hundreds is greater than 6 hundreds, so 48,736 is greater.
Meaning: Ascending means smallest to greatest. Descending means greatest to smallest.
Definition: Ordering means arranging numbers by value.
Use comparison rules to order more than two numbers.
Meaning: Rounding replaces a number with a nearby simpler number.
Definition: Estimation uses rounded numbers to get a close answer.
To round to the nearest hundred, look at the tens digit. If it is 5 or more, round up. If it is less than 5, round down.
Easy
Question: Find the place value of 3 in 7,306.
Medium
Question: Compare 48,736 and 48,673.
Exam-level
Question: Estimate 2,,506 by rounding to the nearest hundred. Then say if 7,995 is reasonable as the exact answer.
Comparing only the last digit
Why it happens: The last digit feels easy to see.
Correct approach: Compare from the largest place on the left.
Rounding the wrong digit
Why it happens: Students look at the rounding place instead of the digit to its right.
Correct approach: Circle the rounding place, then check the digit immediately to the right.
Treating an estimate as exact
Why it happens: The estimate may look neat.
Correct approach: Label estimates clearly and calculate exactly when required.
What is the difference between place value and face value?
Face value is the digit. Place value is the digit multiplied by its place.
