Large numbers are numbers with many digits, such as 48,736 or 5,048,209.
We use large numbers in population, money, distance, data, and science.
This lesson shows how to read, write, compare, and expand large numbers without losing any place value.
A number is built from digits. The value of each digit depends on its place.
In 48,736, the digit 4 means 40,000 because it is in the tehousands place. The digit 4 would mean something different in another place.
Large numbers are easier to read when digits are grouped. The Indian system uses ones, thousands, lakhs, and crores. The international system uses ones, thousands, millions, and billions.
Zeros are important. A zero may not add value by itself, but it keeps other digits in the correct places.
Meaning: Each digit gets its value from its position in the number.
Definition: Place value is the value of a digit because of its place.
In 7,306, the digit 7 is in the thousands place, so its value is 7,000. The digit 3 is in the hundreds place, so its value is 300.
Meaning: The Indian system groups numbers as ones, thousands, lakhs, and crores.
Definition: Indian periods after thousands are usually grouped in twos.
For example, 12,34,567 is read as twelve lakh thirtour thousand five hundred sixteven.
